eTech: irc logs

the irc log of Joe Trippi's keynote speech is online now. This was the first thing to happen at eTech so people where just getting in the groove.

By Wednesday morning irc heckling was in full swing. Pertti Korhonen from Nokia gave a speech called Enabling Life Goes Mobile as one of the keynotes and had a specific slide on the screen during the whole speech. I didn't make it to this one, but I was on irc and I think that was much more interesting than the talk itself. Here's the logs, you decide for yourself:

<Justino> interacting with the world versus interacting wtih the world
<Justino> oops
<Nosuch> backchanneling is interaction
<Frosty> .
<buzzmachine> the access has been bad all week but not THIS bad. and there aren't that many more laptops. is there something they can/should do?????
<dajobe> not everyone's using MS
<seanbonner> you might get a faster connection using your GPRS mobile phone over bluetooth
<_dav> this guy isn't grabbing my attention
<_dav> he needs to announce Nokia Brain Implants or something
<shrub> needs a new slide? :0
<quintimos> me neither...no slides and hard to follow
<ado> new slide would help yeah
<quintimos> But I'm trying
<BtGarner> could have split up all the repeated images into individual slides.
<seanbonner> _dav: yep, it's all about the lobby

<dens> 17/f/nokia keynote
<trilluser> Does anyone have that URL for those tree visualizations that the microsoft guy gave out ?
<shrub> research.microsoft.com ?
<jibot> skadz is a Virgo and is in Boston, MA and can be found at http://www.skadz.com/
<delmartek> is there a nokia sw developer kit available to the general public?
<sniffles> hey ado
<ado> yep
<jibot> Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome samg, im Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret
* _dav would slink into the lobby if he weren't sitting front center -ish
<ado> hey sniffles!
* ado gives sniff a hug
<jibot> Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome slipinCat_, im Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret
<jimdragonkelly> finnish accents don't mix with ADD
<ado> delmartek: yes
<sniffles> ooh!
<BtGarner> _dav: I must be right behind you by a couple of rows.
<delmartek> ado: link, please.
<Nosuch> what does mix with add aside from a room full of bouncing ping pong balls
<molly_girlwonder> my god it's reading the book!
<quintimos> Run...It's a bomb!!!! :)
<_dav> beeping - that's cool
<molly_girlwonder> we don't need the device to read the book
<ado> delmartek: via nokia site
<BtGarner> everyone umute your laptops.
<delmartek> ado: got it
<jibot> Welcome, MatthewL; is this your first time here?
<delmartek> thanks
<cheesebikini> release the roombas
--- MatthewL is now known as mlangham
* sniffles gives ado a squish
<jibot> Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome allennoren, im Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret
<sniffles> just going to get some lunch, bbiab
<ado> don't go, sniff!
<dens> clear

<shrub> jimdragon: can we get a woman with a french accent instead? <g>
<Crabbers> i think we need a new slide about now
<jibot> Milords, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome ratporn
<shrub> we need to see the device on screen like rael had yesterday
<Netminder> found a chair with power!!
<ado> using a different camera man, tho...
<molly_girlwonder> the network leaves a lot to be desired
<BtGarner> lets see some head to head gaming on an N Gage.
<Justino> I've been going for brute force, starting with Cory's work: http://wiki.oreillynet.com/etech/hosted.conf?SessionNotes
<glowrocks> I wonder if he just released a worm into the etech net, ala last nights 24?
<Netminder> ewan snagged one too, woo!
<magnetbox> anyone have a 300 baud acoustic coupler I can borrow?
<noidfish> don't mention 24 spoilers - series 3 hasn't reached the uk yet :)
<jimdragonkelly> there's a prize if you can idenitify all the little pictures on the slide
<jimdragonkelly> (not really)
<dens> i liked the beeping demo
<molly_girlwonder> that would be fun now
<Nosuch> thx <Justino nice & fast
<jimdragonkelly> beeping was an RFID tag reader/writer...
<BtGarner> and you will win a copy of his keynote speech on CD-R
<Argyle> "It cannot crash"
<jimdragonkelly> the book was telling the phone to go look at it's Bookcrossing UID, or similar
<JasonCalacanis> i kind of link this slide
<McUnixJr> DONT LET TANTEK NEAR IT !!!!
<JasonCalacanis> i feel like Mark Canter put something in my latte
<molly_girlwonder> eeeeeeeu
<Crabbers> its growing on me too
<quintimos> So who's got the interesting Q & A questions?
<glowrocks> ok, no spoilers. no one released a worm. nope. didn't happen. ....better? :-)
<quintimos> hehehe
<Netminder> *beep* <silence/>
<Netminder> I crash my phone all the time :(
<ado> "Q & A question"? there's something wrong with this term...
<tadghin> I want to know about scripting on the phone
<lawgeek> Quick, get the machine that goes "Bing!"
<Argyle> Rael crashed a palm phone yesterday
<_dav> seanbonner should be up here bluejacking him
<McUnixJr> DING
<magnetbox> can anyone find that aura project on the ms web site?
<Netminder> python!
<quintimos> Good point....It is somewhat of an oxymoron
<glowrocks> what's w/these mobility talks? this is pretty much as bad as the one late yesterday afternooon
<ado> :)
<noidfish> http://aura.research.microsoft.com
<molly_girlwonder> i just want to know what comes next
<seanbonner> _dav I bluejacked him yesterday while he was on stage
<-- JasonCalacanis has quit ()
<molly_girlwonder> i love marc smith but it seems like the aura stuff is obvious
<Bopuc> molly_girlwonder: THAT's up to YOU
<-- Morbus has quit ("Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com)")
<lawgeek> At what point do we stop calling them phones?
<_dav> seanbonner, no i mean the keynote dude right now
<_dav> the Nokia CTO
<McUnixJr> they are communicators
<quintimos> molly, I'm betting it just continues in it's current direction
<shrub> molly, it's only obvious to etech folks :) sort of like cluterain
<Netminder> I'm at the back, otherwise I'd bluejack
<Bopuc> lawgeek: most people don't call em phones anymore...
<molly_girlwonder> yeah, but what's *next*?
<ado> I thought we call the mobiles...
<BtGarner> when the phone part is an extra, as opposed to the other way around
<seanbonner> Ah, pretty sure I can't get him from the lobby
<molly_girlwonder> people keep coming to the same conclusions about this
<Netminder> nokia's got some shit up their sleeves :)
<molly_girlwonder> cell phones are remote controls
<g10> _dav - do nokia phones *have* bluetooth?
<jimdragonkelly> "something wonderful, molly"
<magnetbox> thank you
<molly_girlwonder> or close controls, more like
<glowrocks> mmm, aura may be obvious, conceptually, but it's not quite yet practical .. at least I think that was his point
<jimdragonkelly> </hal9000>
<_dav> g10, yeah sure
<Bopuc> jimdragonkelly++
<quintimos> Yeah, Let's get some practical applications of the Nokia technology..Blue jacking would atleast be interesting
<molly_girlwonder> but what's after that?
<Justino> i should really be paying better attention
<Netminder> g10: anything above an entry level nokia does
<Justino> but it's hard
<dannie> Im using irc on my nokia rt now
<Ecyrd> Aura has scaling issues: it's hard to read 1,000+ comments on a cell phone screen
<joiito> python on symbian
--> ChrisDodo (~ChrisH@1009host37.starwoodbroadband.com) has joined #etech

<_dav> Justino, yeah i'm with ya
<Justino> holy fuck i just got twenty minutes of chat in one burst
<seanbonner> that talk seemed kinda lame
<molly_girlwonder> there is that
<_dav> PUT UP A NEW SLIDE
<jimdragonkelly> sms of gps waypoints is possible with the nokia 5140... i want to see some ppl hacking stuff with that
<molly_girlwonder> wow, speed read
<shrub> slide++
<KevinMarks> what coems next is a large cup of coffee

<molly_girlwonder> or a nap ?
<seanbonner> kevinmarks++
<ado> hm...
<ado> nap++
<seanbonner> coffee++
<lawgeek> can I buy a jargonword for $200? I just heard "platform" and "interaction" like 5 times in 5 minutes.
<michel_v> damnit
<_dav> maybe we're gonna play a matched pair memory game with this slide at the end of the talk
<delmartek> This seems to be a content free presentation. I was hoping for more from the CTO of Nokia
<jimdragonkelly> simplicty and robustness... not an etech theme...??!??!
<Justino> the net's users are so flakey
<shrub> food++
<KevinMarks> he's saying what joi said yesterday only about 20 times more slowly
<jimdragonkelly> heheh
<Justino> HAH
<molly_girlwonder> don norman is not exciting stuff
<McUnixJr> speed it up KevinMarks
<Justino> KevinMarks
<jimdragonkelly> trust me, you just have to tune into the finnish accent
<joiito> http://joi.typepad.com/photos/etech2004/photo_library_3224.html
<MacRat> Nokia has always been content free
<jimdragonkelly> it's hard
<McUnixJr> HECKLE
<magnetbox> its classic concentration
<michel_v> after three years of constant billing, my mobilephone operator only offers me a measly 50 euros rebate on a new phone!
<Justino> SHOW US AN APPLICATION
<seanbonner> KevinMarks: ew! I'll rush right up
<michel_v> WTF
<Justino> hah
<molly_girlwonder> it's only exciting because he suddenly discovered that design is important
<shrub> where's jim griffin when you need him?
<jibot> mamamusings is adult supervision and of enduring value and in Rochester, NY and blogs at http://mamamusings.net/
<-- slipinCat has quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))

<magnetbox> theres a rebus behind the squares
<McUnixJr> # C L E N C H #
<lawgeek> Is he ever going to change that slide? Or are we stuck with it the whole hour?
* ado wants to see Justino work his ass...
<jibot> Welcome, Krambox; is this your first time here?

<BtGarner> maybe the laptop crashed and no one realizes it
<Netminder> I want to see that beep beep scan scan searchie searchie thing again
<joiito> Orkut...
<-- magnetbox has quit (Excess Flood)
<Justino> i agree with what he's saying but there's no grounding. no specifics
<_dav> what's that dude behinf the monitoor there for?
<MacRat> Maybe O'Reilly should have gotten the CTO of Sony Ericsson

<mamamusings> hi, joi
<PhilGyford> if i stare at the slide long enough, i'm sure i can see a whale and a rainbow emerge...
<KevinMarks> we need to come up with more excuses to get coffe in presentations
<Ecyrd> Christian wanted me to point that out to you =)
<delmartek> Details, details, where are the details
<ado> hey, Ecyrd!
<mamamusings> hey, did anybody log channel discussion during my talk yesterday? i heard there were some interesting things said, and i'm really curious about it.
<dens> make it stop. i want to get off this ride.

<jibot> Milords, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome kidproto
<magnetbox> deusx: what version?
<Justino> "what kind of end user experience do you see coming from the emergence of a peer to peer solution away from the desktop internet?"
--- slipinCat_ is now known as slipinCat
<deusx> Me liking the style system, but wishing for a limit to number of messages in the window. Or a clear scrollback button
<Netminder> is that a converged device in your pocket, or, uhh...
<PhilGyford> you think he'd have been able to find enough pictures that he didn't need to repeat them at least.
<Justino> anyone using Flickr?
<mamamusings> joiito, were you logging the etech channel yesterday while you were missing my session, by any chance?
<Crabbers> i dare someone to ask a question in a mock finnish accent
<cheesebikini> i want mobileguy eyeglasses
<ado> can you ever get rid of the desktop internet?
<deusx> magnetbox: It reports 2.0 (v2B93), though I've compiled from CVS
<Justino> forget the desktop - someday the internet will be in your DESK!
<ado> I guess it depends on what kind of user you are
<KevinMarks> we now have the laptop internet

<PhilGyford> i don't want the internet in my desk, i want it in my top.
<Crabbers> this guy has a soothing trance-like effect
<magnetbox> deusx: what version are you using? I was using a different version yesterday which was way better
