Blog = Report
Anyone else feeling inspired?
I have two takes on this:
- I think it's a great idea and it's exactly this kind of thing that is going to put journalism in check when bloggers start doing it more often. People will learn where the newest and most accurate info is and go there, regardless of what the URL is. Big Media or Blog, and the lines between the two are going to keep blurring.
- The flip side is that this is the kind of thing that is easy for Jeff and Doc to say because TONS of people read their blogs, but all those people don't read every other blog so it's not quite the same. I've seen countless situation where "small random blogger" rants and raves about and issue and no one pays a shred of attention, then, weeks later some A-List blogger mentions it and suddenly it's the topic no one will shut up about. I wish we were at the point that *anyone* making a good point would be heard, but at least now who is making the point still trumps the point it self.

There's a difference between point-making and reporting though. Weighing in on a subject doesn't scream out for original-source footnoting the same way that reporting a fact does, in fact you don't always KNOW why what's on your mind is on your mind- the plant does not remember who planted it(?)
Also, if "Random Blogger" is pointing to writings found elsewhere on the web, s/he doesn't have that strong a claim to "ownership".
I agree, the tendency to ACTB (attribute credit to BoingBoing) is a bummer for random blogger, but it's also human nature, which is not easily vanquished.
