Fight Club At Staples
We just went to Staples to get some mailing labels and found this interesting packaging. Check out who the "sample label" on the box is addressed to:
I'm guessing some designer snuck that in without his boss or anyone else knowing - how fitting.

too bad that movie would not get released post 9/11

420 -- right on dude!

I first noticed this back on September 11, 2002 for an earlier version of the same product. See the link below.

The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club. Shhhh
Posted by: mvidal on June 29, 2004 06:09 PM
We noticed this at our staples a couple of years ago. Pretty funny.
Posted by: KevSlider on June 29, 2004 06:15 PM
That's so awesome. I've actually seen that used as other examples, but I cant remember where!
Posted by: Steen on June 29, 2004 06:43 PM
It's always nice to see Chuck getting free advertising by the consumer system the book railed against. Y'all know it was a book first, right?
Posted by: Parkaboy on June 29, 2004 08:39 PM
yes and I've read 4 of his other books you holier than thou asshole
Posted by: shoe on June 29, 2004 09:20 PM
For a flash demo I contributed to a couple of years ago, the graphic artist populated the user-listings with characters from "Philadelphia Story".
It's funny, because the main character in that movie (played by Katherin Hepburn) is named "Tracey Lord"....

"Y'all know it was a book first, right?"
Funny, no one here mentioned the movie at all.

Hey, at least it wasn't lobster bisque soup.
Posted by: space monkey on June 29, 2004 11:06 PM
If you ask Chuck, thats where he got the name and address. Also, says so in the new edition of the book.

OMG HAX WTF
Posted by: Tylololol Durden on June 30, 2004 12:38 AM
FIGHT Club? Huh.
More like WHITE Club!
Posted by: Tyrone Shoelaces on June 30, 2004 12:48 AM
Hey, I didn't know it was a book, so the geek can be holier-than-me if he wants. Who's the author again?
Posted by: AkiZ on June 30, 2004 02:19 AM
Typical for small companies.
My Workmate is doing a Demo for a Ticketsoftware right now and the Testusers are all Real Names of DC and Marvel Superheros and Villians. I realy love those Details.
So in 2 Weeks Big Bosses of the Textile Industry will watch our Boss present a Software with Barray Allan, Clark Kent and Jhon Jones in the Head Departement.

Anyone else notice the street number?

"If you ask Chuck, thats where he got the name and address. Also, says so in the new edition of the book."
I dont think so. I havnt read the new edition of the book but Chuck does a commentary on the special edition DVD of the film and IIRC says that the name came from his school days, like it was the kid that always acted up.
Posted by: SomeAsshole on June 30, 2004 07:20 AM
"Funny, no one here mentioned the movie at all."
Well, no one except "soap man" in the second comment. ;)
AKiZ, Fight Club was written by Chuck Palahniuk.
Posted by: Chaz on June 30, 2004 07:21 AM
AkiZ, Avery isn't really a small company, so I wouldn't say this is typical.

I think this is part of a larger marketing campaign. I saw a bus in SF yesterday that had a big staples ad on the side, featuring the Tyler Durden info above.
Posted by: top_pops on June 30, 2004 11:26 AM

*giggles* first rule about the movie, don't mention the movie.

It's all part of Project Mayhem.

Anyone who thinks Fightclub is either a good philosophy or that it's not just another consumer product is an idiot. Thank you.
Posted by: Nik on June 30, 2004 03:59 PM
I think you're an idiot!
Wanna fight me now?
Posted by: Jack Frost on June 30, 2004 04:54 PM
Just FYI, Tyler Durden's address in the movie was actually 1537 Paper Street, not 420. I don't know what it was in the book.
Posted by: Yams on June 30, 2004 05:03 PM
who cares about addresses,
parts and pieces,
the film&book inspire change and revolution!
Inspiring change in this fucked up place is an achievment.
thanks chuck, and fuck you 'Nik'

It's funny how so many people can read the entire book or see the movie more than once, and yet somehow COMPLETELY miss that Tyler Durdan was the ANTAGONIST, not the HERO.
Posted by: DavidMcG on June 30, 2004 08:40 PM
Forget the labels, what the fuck is wrong with your hand?
Posted by: x on June 30, 2004 08:41 PM

to the person who says the hand looks fake: it's not. Check out the following website:
http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/sku_image.asp?PageType=1&SKU=AVE8293&ImageTypeName=Enlarged&ReturnURL=%2FCatalog%2FBrowse%2FSku%2Easp%3FPageType%3D1%26Sku%3DAVE8293
That's the official Staples website for those labels.
That's pretty funny.

thank you bill!
i just got done yelling at the computer for the same reason when i read that. amen. chuck's obviously not promoting the cult-like behavior in fight club. just the opposite. tyler durden is the enemy, yet everyone wants to believe he's the good guy just because he's opposing society.
but then again, all of this is really off topic.
i think i'm going to look for that in a store and frame it. just because i'm a dork like that.

Posted by: shay on July 6, 2004 01:06 PM
He was the antagonist AND the hero. From a literary standpoint, it's classic Gothic dualism.
Posted by: CB on July 6, 2004 02:06 PM
"It's funny how so many people can read the entire book or see the movie more than once, and yet somehow COMPLETELY miss that Tyler Durdan was the ANTAGONIST, not the HERO."
Actually, he is the hero. More precisely a superimposed personality created by the hero to accomplish what the Narrator could not.
One could argue that Tyler is more of the "hero" than the Narrator could ever be himself.
Posted by: Rei on July 6, 2004 02:57 PM
Tyler is an antagonist, the character and his movement represent the emerging facist movement in 1930-40's Italy.
Anger towards banks and the credit system (owned by Jews), style of violent destructive pranks, desire to return 'true' machisimo to 'real' men, violent ideology, and a distrust of women, all characterized the Italian facist movement.
[Escape via Facism vs. Slavery via Democracy]
Just something to think about as you watch the movie again.

he may have been written in as the antagonist, but a lot of people that are against all the shit he was against think of him as a hero

These are terrific references. They're not both to FIGHT CLUB, but they are both to Brad Pitt. I gotta go tell my friends about the labels. Bye bye now...Totenkauf.
