Facing the WTC
Russell Simmons owns a loft facing ground zero. Since 9/11 there's been extremely limited access to the building, but this morning our good friend, photographer Glen E. Friedman get in for a few minutes to make a statement which will be up through the RNC. Here's a bunch of pictures from inside and out.

BONUS: Here's some quicktime VR footage from ground zero 10 days after 9/11 that clearly shows Russell's building.
UPDATE: Welcome Freepers! Please post nasty comments on my site! There's some people who think you might *not* be good at taking orders! But you'll show them!! Just keep telling yourself "FREE PUBLIC says we must post here... therefore we must post here."
EVEN MORE UPDATES: Thanks for the traffic uber-right-wing-d00ds! My Google PageRank hearts you! Please, tell all your friends to come here too!
PS: Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Al Qaeda loves Bush!

What sort of damage did the apartments suffer? Have they been off-limits completely since 2001, or has there been access to do repairs and renovations etc?
It would be very interesting to see any pictures of buildings or apartments in range of ground zero that might possibly have been untouched since Sept 11th.

I have some QTVR shot on 9/21/01 right infront of this building.

There are "girly men" all over the USA including NYC. This wimp might not want to defend himself, that's certainly his right, That's not what America is. The Founding Fathers very first acts where to wage war to defend "Freedom".
No one likes war but history has shown that to defeat tyranny war is usually required, Just ask the Blacks if they are glad the Civil War was fought. The proposition that all war is wrong ignores the fact that war ended Slavery, Facism, Communism and several Brutal Monarchies.

They automatically start with the "Free Speech" argument. The elite hollwywood leftists are a prime example. They have the right to make the statements and I have the right to disagree and not buy what they are selling. I forgot free speech only works one way when dealing with the left.

The republican national convention will occur in New York City on or near the 3rd anniversary of 9/11. I think this is crass. Those outraged by Sean Bonners peace signs over the WTC site are just jealous. This is public space, something we all own in our hearts since 9/11. Repubs will be jealous that the Left is able to steal some of the publicity from the Repub Convention's use of NYC and 9/11.

Here is a nice funny for you all.
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude."
She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican."
"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."
The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat."
"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"
"Well," said the man, "You don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem. You're in EXACTLY the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow now, it's MY fault..."!

Republicans don't like to read. If they did, they would read about the motivations behing the invasion of Iraq (money and oil). They would also then read how the military/ industrial complex runs the war machine, and about the strong ties between terrorism and oil money. It's all about money. There's a good article in the June issue of Harper's magazine about this called CONTRACT KILLERS: How privatizing the U.S. Military Subverts Public Oversight.
WAKE UP, American Republicans! READ, READ, READ. And spend your money on education and health care, both for your people and the rest of the world. The body count in Iraq is approaching 1000 Americans, not to mention thousand's in Iraq. Try talking to a mother who has lost her son just so you can haul your fat ass around in an 12 mph SUV. If you think depending on terrorist oil to drive around is patriotic, then you have your head in the sand.
And what about the Patriot Act? Do you even know that that has swept your rights from under your feet? Do you even know what that means? Again, READ ABOUT IT.

"Where" is not a verb. A comma does not make two independent clauses into a compound sentence. John Edwards' last name has an S. Ambulance has two A's, candidate has two D's, and speech has two E's.

Posted by: Guest on July 22, 2004 08:44 PM
It's curious how people criticise someone's monetary class in relation to their political standpoint. "Looks like you can afford to be liberal"??? Since when does being Republican imply an impoverished lifestyle? And what the hell does having a loft in Manhattan matter when someone is wondering why our government is witholding information about how/why a few thousand of their neighbors died?
I make less than 11k a year and I have a sign in my window at home that says "NO IRAQ WAR." Does this mean it looks like I can afford to... wait a second... be a liberal? Be a conservative? Huh?
Since when is it a positive human trait to desire the death of others? Or a negative one to simply know the truth about something? This is all moot anyway, since there is no method to this forum. Sean, this is an ulcer-inducing display (the blog commentary, oddly enough, not the photos) but try to keep your cool. It's always comforting to know that those least educated about something will expose themselves the earliest.
Posted by: Sunday on July 22, 2004 09:46 PM
What the F? I'm rading mostly inane nonsensical obfuscated ramblings here by (mostly) people who don't have a clue what they're talking about. So here's something for all of you. It's an old adage that goes something like, 'If a person is attracted to being in power, then that person should NOT BE in power (politics).'
So most people in power, whether they're Republicans or Democrats or whatever, should be watched. ANY people in power. People running corporations. People running governments. Despots like Hussein. Extreme fundamentalists like bin Laden. Extreme right wing Christians. ANYONE with power to control anyone else. They NEED watchdogs. They need EDUCATED CRITICAL THINKERS to babysit them, otherwise they will do things to fufill their own interests, at the expense of others. LIKE YOU.
So here's what you do to protect YOUR RIGHTS AS AN AMERICAN:
Don't automatically believe everything you see out there. Stop reading ultra-right and ultra-left wing publications. This is important. Take some time to read the small print in these issues and you will sound way less stupid than you do, believe me. Learn what The Patriot Act really is and does. Learn about the military industrial complex. Find out about Halliburton (or have you forgotten already?). Find out how much the military's 'outsourcing' is costing YOU.
Stop watching CNN and all those one-sided propaganda machines. Stop reading People and Maxim, etc. Waste of time. Who do you think pays their bills? And if you think I'm exaggerating, you're wrong.
People in power who have ulterior motives love ignorance and apathy, because they cannot behave surreptitiously without those veils to hide behind. Don't just hate some turban-head because you've been taught to. THINK. READ. THINK before you blast your mouth off. READ some more. You and your life will be much, much better off.
The truth doesn't have to hide. It really doesn't want to hide. For those of you with children and grandchildren out there, this war is costing TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS of dollars. You and yours will be paying for that for decades and decades. What a waste. The world is going to shit because people are too lazy to learn. Too lazy to really know what's going on.
America, you have not learned a thing. Not one thing.

Army Inc. - June 29, The New Yorker.

Santiago, again, how can you criticise a person for having property? Please read those articles I've mentioned. Please.. it won't hurt.
Posted by: cherie on July 22, 2004 10:32 PM
Brian,
sure, I'll respond. Though I am trying to make sense of your response as
much as you seem to imply my being way off base. "On or near" 9/11 is in
the realm of Aug 29-Sept 2. Period.
Try this question: Why New York ? Republicans will be an oddity in New
York City. Dems are holding their convention in Liberal Land,
Massachusetts. Republicans have to pull a publicity stunt and go to NY
City.
Without the occurance of 9/11, if 9/11 never happened, would they be
coming to NY City ? Ummmmmm....
And as for your question about shutting down the city for two months, I'm
not sure what I said about that, if anything.

TruthHurts,
two major themes in life are sex and death. TV and movies exploit these two themes relentlessly. Clinton lied about the his sex life, Bush lied to take our nation to war. No comparison in terms of the degree of the lie. Put Bush under oath, I'd love to see that. He knows what he knows, and no debate will change his mind. That's dangerous.

When I say "religious zealot" immediately someone says I hate religion. What's your point ? I don't hate religion, as far as it provides artistic expression to the dreams of men. Science has taken dominance away from Religion, and Bush and bin Laden want to bring back Religion as the truth bearer in the world. But Scientific truth is shallow as well. Art and Poetry, William Blake's use of and extension of the book of Revelations. Art and Poetry are what make us great.

BARBEQUED TURKEY
· 1 10 lb boneless turkey breast
· 1 liter of 7-UP
· 1 pint canola oil
· 1 pint soy sauce
· 1 Tablespoon horseradish
· 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
Slice the turkey into steaks or chops, anywhere from ¼" to ½" thin.
Combine all the other ingredients, and mix them up. Marinate the turkey for 18-24 hours. Swishing occasionally, as the oil will separate. It’s probably a good idea to turn it from time-to-time too, if everything isn’t completely covered.

I AM ALL FOR HELPING PEOPLE OUT BUT WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BEAR THE BRUNT OF MORE QUOTA'S AND WHERE DO YOU THINK THE MONEY WILL BE MADE UP FROM THE RACIST TAX BREAKS?
