BLOGON: morning irc logs
Here's the logs from the back channel from this morning's panels. I guess the entire network went down a few minutes into the last panel (the one I was on) so it kind of stops short. Click more to read the rest. Just want to say again that the camera guy was a total tool and on a power trip from hell.

Jul 23 09:51:42 [ChristopherA> There was a big discussion about implicit (i.e. spoke) vs. explicit (i.e. linkedin) social networking last night at the CMU speaker series.
Jul 23 09:52:00 [rossm> sorry to have missed it
Jul 23 09:52:11 [stowe> huh?
Jul 23 09:52:13 [rossm> anybody blog it?
Jul 23 09:52:14 [seanbonner> wah?

Jul 23 09:52:53 [teknowcrat> can anyone restate her question for me?
Jul 23 09:52:56 [stowe> because spoke is putting in non-opted-in data in the network?
Jul 23 09:53:08 [jluster> seanbonner: Blogchannel instead of Backchannel
Jul 23 09:53:09 [jluster> ?
Jul 23 09:53:20 [stowe> chris?
Jul 23 09:53:28 [evectorsmatt> damn, lost the audio
Jul 23 09:53:29 [theagent> John-Boy?
Jul 23 09:53:32 [seanbonner> indeed.
Jul 23 09:54:17 [seanbonner> someone needs to stealth disco
Jul 23 09:54:24 [ChristopherA> Stowe: Spoke gets your social network based on people's address books and emails.
Jul 23 09:54:40 [stowe> and...
Jul 23 09:54:40 [evectorsmatt> this sucks
Jul 23 09:54:53 [ChristopherA> So for instance, spoke has an identity for you which is everyone's bad email address for you.
Jul 23 09:54:56 [teknowcrat> evectorsmatt: no audio?
Jul 23 09:55:05 [stowe> that makes it implicit?
Jul 23 09:55:21 [evectorsmatt> no
Jul 23 09:55:23 [theagent> Dana sounds like she has to burp
Jul 23 09:55:25 [stowe> I would have thought my email traffic is explicit
Jul 23 09:55:27 [miker> good comment ChristopherA
Jul 23 09:55:35 [seanbonner> the web / blogs are ALL ABOUT letting people do their thing.
Jul 23 09:55:39 [ChristopherA> Yes. Explicit when the user says "x is my friend" rather then discovering it from your history.
Jul 23 09:55:42 [evectorsmatt> no sound
Jul 23 09:55:47 [stowe> she said she has strep and brochitis
Jul 23 09:55:54 [teknowcrat> what question are they respondind to?
Jul 23 09:55:56 [stowe> ok
Jul 23 09:55:56 [seanbonner> that the metblog model anyway.
Jul 23 09:55:57 [jluster> danah confuses folkway creation and mores passed down
Jul 23 09:56:04 [ChristopherA> Stowe, yes, so you are friends with your mortage company? Your ex-wife's lawyer?
Jul 23 09:56:07 [stowe> I thought you were making a different distinction
Jul 23 09:56:10 [rossm> chris, another definition is if the relationship is made visible at all (e.g. vs. blogging)
Jul 23 09:56:16 [theagent> they don't need to become one... but it would be nice to have profile interchange
Jul 23 09:56:46 [stowe> no, but I have a social relationship with them
Jul 23 09:56:55 [stowe> friendship is not the only modality
Jul 23 09:57:04 [rossm> on implicit/explicit, a work in progress: http://www.socialtext.net/m2m/index.cgi?relationship_discovery_and_representation
Jul 23 09:57:04 [ChristopherA> The classic example with spoke is that they have me as president of Consensus Development, becasue some people have that old data for me, but I have no access to that account anymore so I can't claim it.
Jul 23 09:57:05 [teknowcrat> this panel is not connected to this backchannel
Jul 23 09:57:09 [stowe> I trust my mortgage broker
Jul 23 09:57:16 [jluster> stowe: a social relationship? not a trust relationship?
Jul 23 09:57:19 [rossm> I could get up an ask a question on behalf of the back channel
Jul 23 09:57:37 [seanbonner> viva la back channel
Jul 23 09:57:53 [evectorsmatt> now QuickTime has frozen
Jul 23 09:57:53 [teknowcrat> ok
Jul 23 09:57:53 [evectorsmatt> bah
Jul 23 09:57:53 [teknowcrat> rossm: How do we give privacy control back to the individual?
Jul 23 09:58:03 [jluster> stowe: at least in conflict theory, social networks emphasize identity, while trust relationships emphasize communication
Jul 23 09:58:06 [ChristopherA> But without explicit, it could be wrong, or misinterpret.
Jul 23 09:58:27 [theagent> the one thing that hasn't been talked about is identity and its impact in different social networks
Jul 23 09:58:31 [evectorsmatt> Is anyone else watching via live stream? do you have audio?
Jul 23 09:58:34 [teknowcrat> jluster: communication of your identity?
Jul 23 09:58:45 [jluster> teknowcrat: communication of factoids
Jul 23 09:58:51 [theagent> evectorsmatt: I do have audio

Jul 23 09:58:59 [teknowcrat> personal and or otherwise?
Jul 23 09:59:06 [theagent> take the stream directly in Quicktime and get it out of the browser
Jul 23 09:59:07 [rkrato> evectorsmatt: I can hear in FL
Jul 23 09:59:08 [stowe> the stream works for me
Jul 23 09:59:14 [evectorsmatt> theagent: I am watching directly in QT
Jul 23 09:59:22 [HeikoHebig> audio working in germany, video.. well...
Jul 23 09:59:29 [evectorsmatt> restarting QT
Jul 23 09:59:31 [teknowcrat> evectorsmatt: reboot...:)
Jul 23 09:59:33 [ChristopherA> ross: given your chart, spoke crosses over both implicit and explicit.
Jul 23 10:00:08 [evectorsmatt> sounds back
Jul 23 10:00:33 [stowe> re: implicit/explicit - I think the true distinction is whether the individuals have actaully opted in (explicit) to the network as opposed to being entries in someone's rolodex (implicit)
Jul 23 10:01:10 [rossm> chris, its an open post, please feel free to modify :-)
Jul 23 10:01:25 [theagent> fixation in the means of tangible expression
Jul 23 10:01:38 [miker> I think the difference between implicit vs explicit is that relationships are inferred from actual interaction in implicit, and stated in some kind of form or questionaire for explicit

Jul 23 10:04:39 [tedr> it's funny I've been experiementing w/ both explicit and implicit on my site, and when it's purely explicit users do not realize there are more features they could use. When it's purely implicit, of course, it infuriates people. But when it's implicit everyone realises the feature exists and many more would switch over to using it explicitly vs. if it was only explicit from the beginning.

Jul 23 10:05:13 [stowe> first we kill all the lawyers
Jul 23 10:05:18 [tedr> So it's a weird balance, since no one ever reads directions on a website, you almost have to offer something to them in an implicit manner just so they know they can use and then offer them the right to change to explicit usage

Jul 23 10:12:03 [Robin> Q to the backchannel: Seems like there's this overreaction to IP law violation b/c companies are afraid of what will happen if they let the "little stuff" slide. It's really don't think they're actually eager to stick it to 13-year-olds. They believe they HAVE to, yeah? So what's the argument that says, "You don't have to go after the 13-year-old downloader" -- what will reassure corps?
Jul 23 10:12:04 [Robin> er, I really don't think
Jul 23 10:12:04 [stowe> am i still here?

Jul 23 10:12:04 [Robin> Heiko: Agreed, but a lot of law procedure doesn't obey common sense, right? I feel like this is a much more legalistic issue than we think. (I could be wrong.)

Power trip? Tool? Sean, please elucidate. What did I do to upset you? How is it that anyone has even noticed that I'm here? Why in hell am I being slandered on your blog?

You were a total dick when I asked to walk past you in the isle, and then extremely rude later when Susan was trying to hook my laptop up to the projector to put the IRC back channel on the wall. You are not being slandered, I'm stating my opinion that you lack massive some interpersonal skills. Clearly other people agree. Learn how to be nice to people and you won't have to worry about this stuff in the future.

That does it - you're no longer invited over for grilled tempeh! Sure glad I put so much effort into trying to explain what was ACTUALLY going on.
If you can find another person in the world who thinks I'm an ass, I'll buy you a bottle of nice sake.

that's exactly my point - everyone knew what was going on in the first place. The problem was your reaction.
On a side note, I've never been able to pull off grilling tempeh so if you have any pointers that would rock.

Even though I think that's settled already, I'd just like to point out that they only thing that you could call Scot is dedicated and being dedicated to running a live feed might have made him seem like on a power trip, but if somebody is not on a power trip than it's scot, and I know him personally. And boy is he not a dick, prick, asshole, whatever. Scot is one of the nicest and kindest guys I know.
I like the reporting from blogging conferences, and any conference really. I love bloggers putting all the effort into giving me a glimps of what is going on at conferences I can't attend. But even cooler is a video feed and I am sorry to say that this is a little bit more fault tolerant than blogging. And bloggers should really support that with alll their might because it adds even more power to the world out there as we can then follow the conference fullly.
So that's that. I'll shut up now. On to other things.
