Multiply?

Last night I got a few e-mail invites for YASNS called "Multiply." The e-mails said:

Personal message from *****: I've decided to add my network over on Multiply since there's a ton more I can do with it there. I've got my own personal web page where I can share my photos, journal, reviews, classifieds, etc. with you and all my other friends. I now go to Multiply regularly to check the message board and see the new stuff posted in my network. Accept my invitation and check it out for yourself.

the ***** was my friends name in each e-mail, but holy crap! So in addition to keeping tabs on my network I guess it teaches you how to write in corporate marketing advertising talk. Although, it's pretty creepy that all my friends had the same "personal" message. The e-mail went on with a but of a FAQ:

Is this just like other "networking" sites I have heard about?

Actually it's much different, and much better. While other
sites are strictly about meeting new people, Multiply is a
communication tool that makes it easier to stay in touch
with people you already know.

*cough* *Bullshit* *cough*

Sounds a lot like every other FOAF network out there.

Can't I just use e-mail to communicate with people I know?

Multiply integrates tools, such as photo album sharing, with
messaging which makes it easier and more convenient to use
than e-mail. Plus, you can easily get in touch with your
contact's contacts. You'll no longer need to ask a question
starting with "Do you know someone that...."

WTF are they talking about? Maybe they should check out a few other sites like, oh.. I don't know.. friendster, tribe, orkut, flickr, etc...

But this is the best one:

This sounds interesting but a little confusing. Can I learn more?

It's actually all surprisingly simple. To read a little more
about how the product works please visit:

Are you following this? On the e-mail they sent out to try and get people to join their service they call their own descriptions of it "confusing", assuming that I'm "interested" and call it a "product." How appealing. Can't wait to sign up... oops, I think I just deleted all the invites.

Oh well.

You know, I got one of those the other day from Jon Perry Barlow.

I thought nothing of it - Barlow's a distant but definite personal contact, we're hooked together on Orkut and he's an inveterate networker - and joined up just to see how it would stack up against Tribe, Ryze and Orkut.

It was only after plowing through yet another irritating set of questions to set up my "profile" that I thought to go see what Barlow had put on his, and who he might be connected to at Multiply:

Nothing. Abolutely. Blank, but for the same photo that appears on his Orkut profile.

This leads me to believe, in light of your report, Sean that some sneaky bastard at Multiply snagged Barlow's contacts list (and the lists of whoever "emailed" you) and used them to spam all available contacts.

I've since deleted as much of my info as possible, and am now awaiting a reply on an emailed request for Multiply to delete my account.
