Airport Dress Codes
"If you are travelling by plane it behooves you to dress appropriately, as this post from Smart Mobs discusses. I had thought about wearing easily removable shoes, but the wireless bra never occurred to me."
[via Ernie The Attorney.]
It's funny Ernie mentions this as I was just talking about this very thing. I've always been very conscious of what I wear to make sure there's no metal bits to set off detectors but I've actually taken this a bit further. I've always flown quite a bit and for years I got singled out every time I went through the screeners (way before 9/11 even) and I could never figure out why. Then I started thinking about the situation in non-airport terms - what I mean is anytime there's people in authority whose job is to pick people out of a group, they pick the ones who don't quite fit. Just look at any high school for the evidence there. So I started dressing more conservatively when I fly. Hair combed, no exposed tattoos, dress shirt, you get the idea. Try to look as much like the next guy as I can. And guess what? I don't get stopped anymore. In fact I've tried this the last 5 or 6 times I've flown and it's worked perfectly each time. It's not surprising when you think about it, just interesting that it's that easy to "disappear."
