Yaju no seishun

Yaju no seishun (Youth of the Best) just became one of my favorite movies. I'm running out to buy it any minute now because I have to take this rented version back and I want to watch it again and again. I've been a fan of Seijun Suzukui for a while now, well actually since Pat was in town and convinced me to buy Tokyo Drifter, but somehow this one escaped me. If you like 1960's Yakuza movies at all this one is a must see.

'youth of the beast' was the flick that got me excited about suzuki... i had heard good things about 'branded to kill,' but found it too disconnected and careless to sustain my interest. but when i finally saw 'youth,' and 'tokyo drifter'... man. criterion released 'youth' on vhs years back, which is how i saw it, but the dvd just became available in the last few weeks.

they also just released 'fighting elegy,' which is a satire of japan's obsession with militarism and not a genre flick like the yakuza movies, but is still worth picking up. it's just psychotic, but thankfully has a coherent narrative style.

Yep, I rented 'branded to kill' last night and turned it off about an hour in as it was too all over the place. I was the Youth Of The Beast DVD and promply ordered it as no store within an hour of here had a copy of it. Eh, oh well, amazon is pretty fast.
