eTech: Rael's Intro
Rael: P2P began in 2001 and was replaced by eTech shortly there after. It's about "hands-on Imparative" which isn't limited to tech geeks - Sidewalk Astronomers and Chunkers are examples of non-tech world groups that have dug in and gotten their hands dirty doing things on their own rather than using what is handed to them. The Sidewalk Astronomers who grind their own mirrors and Chunkers who build their own bikes.
The gap between "Consumer" and "Prosumer" is closing and people are moving from waiting for their cousin who is "into computers" to fix things for them and learning how to do these things themselves.
So why now? Because we're 20 years into the PC era and that's how it works. "Given enough eyeballs, all features are obvious." LazyWeb and spreading openness.
Hacking is Remixing. It's taking one thing and making it something else. Same as with hiphop.
Remix your web: View Source, Firefox, JavaScript, Desktop Integration...
Remix your music: 1. Rip - customers sent a message but music industry wasn't listening, but Apple was and stepped up to solve those problems.
Remix your TV: Thanks to TiVo any night is Thursday night. No more rushing to catch something at a specific time. Networks tried to fight back with the "off by one minute" error which was combated by TiVo just adding a different tuner.
Remix your network: Wifi and all that goes along with it. Apple is making it painfully simple.
Remix your Movies: BitTorrent scares everyone, Video on Demand actually works, Netflicks scares Blockbuster, Blockbuster scrapes to catch up, Everyone warms up to BitTorrent.
Remix your Data: Scraping -> XML -> API / All these various things joined together makes something grand.
Remix your Text: I'm blogging this.
Remix Syndication: RSS allowed My Netscape to compete with Yahoo!, RSS allows syndication, which in turn cycles back to Yahoo!, and everyone tries to make cash on RSS.
Remix your Bookshelf: Info locked up in paper is hard to get to and not easily searchable.
Remix IT: Hacks become framework become foundation. Raw material does grow on trees.
Browser(again) - everyone loves Firefox. Did we mention that yet?
Remix Brick-and-mortar: Amazon in store pickup. Huge Wal Marts down the street disappear if they aren't online.
Remix Space: NASA goes down, Space Ship One goes up.
Tim is up next
