eTech: Playing with Tiger

Mac OS X Tiger: Changing the Way You Use Your Computer - I'm going to skip the initial "why apple?" stuff since you already know it (Or you should anyway) and skip right to the new OS X Tiger features being talked about. Wiley Hodges is presenting.

Spotlight - searches file name and content, instant as you type results, fully integrated, supports all languages supported by the OS. Searching from the nav bar, you can also customize it not to search certain places (like files owned [not pw0n3d] by other users). Smart folders which include items you're searching for, that's right SMART FOLDERS. Holy crap that's the coolest thing ever. Also Smart Folders in Mail, Smart folders in Address Book. Searching Metadata. Works with Plug-ins. Uses Preview to view multiple results without opening the file, and oh yeah, it's LIVE (not from indexing). Also, ads itself into Microsoft Office.

Dashboard - widgets and utility apps all over the place. These are built using web standards so people can build them like crazy. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc... And to demonstrate he's just opened the package and dropped the html file into Safari and.. it Crashes! Second try it worked fine. Heh. So now all kinds of people can build these little apps.

RSS - building RSS into Safari (Firefox does this already), bookmark feeds (Safari does this already), Search feeds (Net News Wire does this), and bookmark searches (which I don't think anyone does).

Automater - Automate tasks without having to be a programmer. Like... pulling images from web pages and putting them into iphoto and lots of fun things like that. And yes, an action can call another action and entire work flows can be automated.

This all looks very cool, can't wait to get to play with this myself.

something extremely cool I've heard, but have not seen proof of yet, is that tiger will allow you to use your mac as a bluetooth headset for your mobile phone.
