The Long Horse Debate
Over on BoingBoing Mark has been covering the issue of the (now extinct) Long Horses. Here's his original post and today's follow up pointing to the Wikipedia Article on the species. It's insane that some people are trying to say they never existed. I suppose these are the same people who say that just because there aren't dinosaurs walking around today they never existed either. One of the reasons this is so interesting in that, at least here in the US, Long Horses hold a dear place in our history since the first President of the United States, George Washington not only owned a Long Horse but it was his mount of choice. In fact he rode it so often that many portraits and images of him show his trust Long Horse with him.
Here's a painting from the National Archives:

And here's a toy that I picked up at a garage sale a few years back:

But most notably, there's a freaking statue in Washington DC of him on a Long Horse:

It's pretty shocking that people are such revisionists these days. Tsk tsk.
UPDATE: There are some real skeptics in the comments so I had to dig up even more proof - here's some info.

Next Entry: More Long Horses
I wasn't sure about the Long Horse until I saw this evidence.
What a noble beast. The world is diminished by the loss.

What a load of crap. That statue is clearly in Boston.

I am convinced this is a well-organized hoax against the entire planet. I have seen before my very own eyes a so-called KKK evil death long horse photo. While the KKK horse looks very real, I doubt that the KKK riders would have formed a chain like they did on top of the horse considering thier aversion to homosexuality. I think this long horse hoax may very well be the front for a homosexual anti-KKK agenda or worse.

Apparently there was also a long pig. Once when I was visiting a Pacific island, some natives served me a dish called "long pig" that was very tender and delicious. I asked for it in several shops and Asian grocery stores, but I mostly get blank stares.

Ummm- please sir- take a little longer with Photoshop- the clone tool needs a sure hand.
Posted by: matt on December 4, 2006 05:09 PM
I had some doubt, but your article has cleared all that up. I'm so excited to spread the word! People can be so ignorant.
Posted by: MKK on December 4, 2006 05:12 PM
The staute of Washington on his long horse is actually in Boston's Public Garden - cheap-Masons did not want to waste the stone so as you can see ol' George looks like he and his noble steed is about to walk off down Commonwealth Ave. any minute.

nice troll. looking to join the gnaa?
Posted by: drauh on December 4, 2006 07:28 PM
Please, these pictures are so badly photoshopped, it hurts my eyes. I urge you not to make others believe in this obvious bullshit. I agree that you really need to take your time with the cloning tool, man. The bellies of the horses are jagged, and Washington's toy sword keeps repeating. C'mon, these are blatantly obvious fakes. And why would the statue extend beyond its pedestal? If the masons wanted to save money, they would have made the statue smaller. EVERYONE: THIS GUY IS TRYING TO BULLSHIT US ALL.
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 08:40 PM
Cloning tool? What are you some kind of idiot? There is 100% zero photoshopping in the above images. I took two of those photos myself! Just look on Google you idiots. Yeah, there are no long horses, whatever smart guys, I guess the world is flat too.
Posted by: sean bonner on December 4, 2006 09:08 PM
And that "color photo" you posted on boingboing: every saddle, down to every single pixel is perfectly identical. This could only have happened if someone just cloned sections of the horse to create an illusion of a "long horse". Proof that the statue is photoshopped: visit http://www-gt.diff.net/media/2001_07_27_Boston_trip/104/
that is the original . You are getting mad at everyone who denies the (former) existence of longhorses, yet you simply do not get that everything you base your case on is photoshopped. Shame on you, seriously.
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:18 PM
And that cloud on the left side of the picture with the statue: it ends so abruptly, as if someone had moved another piece of a picture over it. THESE PICTURES ARE PHOTOSHOPPED, FOOL!
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:21 PM
Of course you took those pictures. And then you photoshopped them.

This the exact original, my bad.
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:26 PM
Your picture's still photoshopped, though. :)
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:27 PM
It is well known in intelligence circles Saddam Hussein had a stable full of these fearsome beasts. They are real I tell you!
Posted by: Rummy on December 4, 2006 09:28 PM
What? That photo looks different because it's a different statue. The photo I took is of George Washington on a Long Horse, that one you linked to is him on some regular horse. Are you blind?
Posted by: sean bonner on December 4, 2006 09:28 PM
I'm tired of your obnoxious incapability to comprehend reality. I'm not putting up with you any more.
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:31 PM
wow, its like he thinks if he tries hard enough he can just make us say, "oh really, not photoshopped, even though all evidence possible shows it is?" dur, ok i guess, if he says so"
Posted by: Colleen on December 4, 2006 09:33 PM
Nice find, Sean. Rana, you're just not acquainted with the scientific method dearie.
Posted by: Rani on December 4, 2006 09:50 PM
I think there is a huuuuuuge misunderstanding here. I assumed you guys were serious. Beleive me, here in san francisco there are a lot of quacks who would truly believe in this stuff. In that case, I apologize for having done any harm (and, of course, for having called anyone a fool). oopsies.
Posted by: rana on December 4, 2006 09:54 PM
who isn't serious? Are you calling me a liar? Do I have to post more images to back up my claims even further?

the repetition in the horses abdomen is due to the unique skeletal structure of the long horse that allowed it to maintain a graceful stability despite its quite unusual length. long horse riders would often accentuate the horse's beautiful natural frame by attaching numerous swords to the saddle. this practice allowed for a surplus of weapons, which aided the rider in battle.

haha! aren`t you ashamed to show this pictures?

yes, i'm some kind of idiot to fall for your troll, you cunt.
Posted by: drauh on December 6, 2006 04:40 PM
Anyone who says these images are fake obviously has very little experience with Photoshop. There are in fact a number of tell-tale signs of clone-tool use, and anyone with even a passing acquaintance with said tool will immediately recognize that these signs are absent from the above photos. The same applies for variations on the cut-and-paste tool.
Some of the commenters here have missed the point left, right and center: yes, Sean is being absolutely serious; yes, the photos are real, and YES, there was in fact a variety of horse known as the Long Horse until the latter half of the 20th century.
Posted by: ts on December 7, 2006 01:08 AM
is this species related to the infamous Short Cow?
Posted by: Greg Cohn on December 13, 2006 09:46 PM
LMAO!!!
Anyone who's ever played with photoshop can see that these photo's have been manipulated (and badly, too). Whether the "long horse" really existed is outsidemy area of expertise, but I can tell you woth 100% certainty that these pictures have been ametureishly photoshopped.
- First pic: Look at ALL the content on a vertical plane. You can easily see the pattern repetition ONLY where the horse is made "longer"
- Second pic: Again, look at wahingtons sword and the lower body of the horse. See how his sword is cut off every time, but long at the end?
-Third pic: WTF?!?! Are those "long horse nipples?" Again you can see the artifact along the vertical plane where the cloning attmepts were made.
LMFAO!!!!

As Carlos Mencia says...
DEE Dee Dee!
Posted by: Heavydpj on December 16, 2006 04:52 PM
Why does the top picture have no serrations on the underside, while the middle picture has three serrations and the bottom picture have four?
If the first photo is in the national acrhives, I'll zip on over Monday and take a look, What is the catalog number?
Where is the location of the second statue, so that I may examine it?
ROFL!!!!!

BTW...I'm dating a graphic artist (who is a member of National Association of Photoshop Professionals) and works with Photoshop on a daily basis. She's seen better work from high school students.
She cocurs with my opinion.

Not only are you cashing in on Hardy Burmeier's original works, your'e bad at it...
from a cached wikipedia article...
German artist Hardy Burmeier created the idea of the long horse for his 2001 work Le Grand Louis, a collection of historical photographs of horses which had been digitally manipulated to exhibit unnaturally extended torsos.
An online version of this work was linked to by BoingBoing in November 2006, leading to the creation of further long horse images by its readers, and the hoax suggestion that these horses genuinely existed.

THE WORST PHOTOSHOP WORK EVER, YOU CAN SEE THE REPEATING PIECES OF BOTH THE PAINTING AND THE STATUE.
