Top Guns For Geeks?

Over at Gizmodo they have a post about geeks with guns, or rather the top guns for geeks. They put together a top 12 list, however they missed the target almost across the board. They start off with some sound logic by stating:

"After the appalling tragedy in Salt Lake City earlier this week where an 18-year-old gunman began indiscriminately shooting people to death, our thoughts drifted toward arming ourselves to the teeth. The off-duty (and armed) cop on the scene saved countless lives, keeping the gunman pinned down until backup arrived. Maybe more citizens needed to be carrying guns on that fateful day."

Unfortunately that's were their reason ends because the list of guns they include are anything but geeky. Well, excluding the Rail and DREAD guns, which don't actually exist. Obviously those are geeky simply for being (or not being) what they are. Also the Tommygun is exempt because the thing is a damn classic and there's no arguing that the only real reason to own one these days is because you are a giant nerd. Hell, if they were legal I'd own one.

That said, the rest of their list is anything but geeky. Here's a few that should have been included:

Common, just look at that thing. There's nothing else like it, and the 50 round magazine sits ontop of the gun, rather than under it. Totally nerdy.

First off, the fact that not a single gun by Heckler & Koch made the Gizmodo list is insane, they make the nerdiest guns out there, which is why I'm a proud HK owner. This one in particular never made it past prototype stage but is most notable for it's use of caseless ammunition. That's right, no shells.

Back to the Gizmodo list, not only did they list an Uzi rather than this, they listed TWO uzis! WTF?? The MP5 is about a bajillion times better than the UZI, if for no other reason that there is a briefcase variant. Also, like most HKs, it's customizable on just about every level. In fact, the only HK machine gun I'd rather have is the...

HK MP7 [on wikipedia]
How bad ass is that? This little bad boy is a "personal defense weapon" chambered in 4.6 x 30 mm which makes the rounds shot by some of these others look like BBs. It's light as hell, and it just looks super cool.

HK USP [on wikipedia]
If handguns are your preferred flavor, it's hard to get more geeky than the USP or "Universal Self-loading Pistol." This is about the most customizable handgun there is. Single Action, Double Action, Right Handed, Left Handed - it's all component based so you can change it around to the exact set up that works for you. It's available in just about every standard handgun round as well as compact, and match grade elite versions. This gun owns.

Anything good is worth thinking with to make it better, and HK seems to think that's what their newest handgun is. It uses a lot of the features of the USP but ads things like a standard picatinny rail and several different sized grips so you can get the perfect fit for you hand. I haven't seen one of these in person yet, but the pictures look pretty fantastic.

Funny thing is, guns are just another gadget and gadget nuts seem to be all over them these days. I keep running into bloggers and gadget hounds at the range. It's not that surprising actually, but Gizmodo totally missing the HK boat is unforgivable. I expected better from you guys.
