It's no secret that I beat the crap out of my laptops. I drag them everywhere, use them non-stop and generally push them to their physical limits. I've been using a last generation PowerBook G4 since about the week it came out and it's been a very sturdy trooper though everything but last week I think I crossed the line. I accidentally stepped on the cord while walking across the room which cased the laptop to fly off the couch where it was sitting and bounce, yes bounce on the hardwood floors. And it was open at the time. My heart stopped thinking I'd killed it but upon closer inspection it seemed to still be functioning. Well not extremely close inspection, but close enough. Later that day I realized the hinge was not behaving normally, and closing it all the way was a bit more sketchy. During my travels yesterday (because the best thing to do with a damaged laptop is take it on a trip) I noticed the seams on the side of the keyboard starting to come open and it seems to be getting worse by the moment. This is not good. Time to get a new machine and I'm going to play cautious and not take this one with me out walking around anymore than I can avoid in the near future. Yikes!
i have had the same luck with laptops, and swear that now that they're powerful enough my next machine will be a macbook, not a MBP. this aluminum shells are too fragile for my abuse. you might want to consider it too.
this is why i really think there could be an awesome niche category of "rugged prosumer" electronics. i love that there are ruggedized gadgets and laptops, but they rarely meet my needs, since i honestly require higher end devices. i never ask for more features than i'd honestly use, but too often ruggedized gadgets rarely meet my minimum feature requirements. if someone would just realize that even those of us who are honestly hard on our stuff need high end devices too, i think alot of people would be happy to support them.

This is exactly the sort of instance that makes you realize how cool the new Macbook magnetic power cords are. They pop right off way before there's enough force to move the laptop itself.

Yes, someday soon these will be true commodities and we will get the "Sports" version (remember those Walkmen all covered in water resistant yellow rubber?)laptops.
Keep living your life and using your tools, not living for them!
