Be my fashion advisor

Following my post about not over thinking things, I'm totally over thinking this. I'm going to Vienna at the end of this year and need a new jacket because I got rid of all my really cold weather jackets when I moved out of Chicago and it's going to be cold as hell there. I've decided I'm going to get a flight jacket for a whole ton of reasons including that they are super lightweight yet still very warm but can also be relatively cool (meaning I'm not buying a jacket I'll only be able to use for 2 months), they double as wind breakers, and they are damn comfortable. I used to have one and really liked it. And by "have one" I mean borrowed one from a friend and forgot to give it back for a few months. So now I need to decide between the black or the dark blue. I've got reasons for and against both.
Black: For: Matches the rest of my mostly black wardrobe. Kinda the classic color. Against: Gold zippers, kinda skinheady, kinda Pattern Recognition (which might not be that bad a thing).
Blue: For: The color I had before, zippers are same color so don't stand out. Against: Violates my "try to buy everything in black so everything matches with everything" rule.
So I'm turning to you, the 7 readers of my blog, which color should I get?
UPDATE: OK enough people have convinced me that this jacket isn't going to be warm enough for the main thing I'm considering buying it for so forget it. I'm looking at other options, including the old faithful Carhartt + sweatshirt combo that rocked when I lived in Chicago.

I would say black. I don't really like gold either but my dislike of that blue slightly outweighs my dislike of the gold accents. Plus, the blue makes you seem like a big dodger fan.

What pxlhearder said. Get something from Carhart. A windbreaker or something. =)

Oof yeah man that is standard issue skinhead/neo-nazi/street-punk wear. :\

black is the new black and the old black.
And mitzi's right - you don't want to look like a dogers fan

I'd say go for the orange one.

Mark down another vote against the flight jacket. I definitely think that the skinhead connotations would be even greater in Europe. Also, it's just not contemporary enough. Perhaps something similar, but a little more deconstructed, ala Jeffrey Sibelia? Mayhaps even a custom jobby (either by him or a DIY of your own). Let's move things forward!

I'd say go for the blue. The zipper's my tie-breaker.

OK, more thoughts on this - Growing up in Tampa surrounded by skinheads I saw a lot of these, obviously, but the shaved head pretty much goes with the territory on that one. Meaning that no one ever assumed the folks who didn't have shaved heads were skinheads, but whatever. That is a good point to consider. The gold zipper REALLY annoys me, and more so in this pic than it did in person. The trick here is I want simple and cheep - I had a carhart in Chicago a loved it, but it was HEAVY and only good when it was really cold. Hmmm....

i'd say get a hooded overcoat.
b1 jackets is sorta kinda labeled with a negative connotation. :S

Actually you should go for layers. Get something that's light enough for California but ample enough to comfortably fit a polar shirt under it. For me that's good up to minus 10 C.

Have you decided against the flight jacket yet? If so, go with an LL Bean field jacket with a removable liner. Excellent choice. Manly and comfortable. I don't know if they come in black, though.

Gold zippers are fucking lame, dude. Take a chance and go for the blue.

i say black. the brass zipper is classic, ok, technologically sucky, but classic. second best is the purple. never get the blue. black may say skinhead but blue says flyboy, or worse, flyboy wannabe.
i definitely agree with commenters that there are better choices than the standard issue surplus store model - the buzz rickson is CRAZY nice, plus has geek cache or there's some great ones from mooks and spiewak. and TAD gear is the shit, but doesn't really have the punk rock aesthetic you seem to rock.
HOLD ON. you're want this for vienna at the end of the year? dude, it's gonna be cold there. *really* cold. flight jackets are not made for mountain winters. you need get something more ummm, WARM. like something with a collar, and some real insulation. it doesn't have to be heavy, but cheap and black probably should not be your only two qualifiers or you'll be hella cold.

I'd have to go with Blue. Black is, at least to me, always associated with skinheads. Perhaps that's an unfair stereotype, but what're ya gonna do.

Regarding whatever new style of jacket you decide on:
No gold zippers. Ever.
What about navy blue? Contrary to popular belief, if you know what you are doing, you can wear navy and black together.

you should get a jacket with a hood...as well as the blue one!

I personally wear an old Carhartt coat. I think it's the Sandstone Traditional Coat, in the color Midnight, but can't say for sure, because it was handed down to me after a few people basically wore it out. I realize it's around $100 if you buy it new, but it's a great coat to have even when it's hot outside, because you never know when you will walk into a freezing cold restaurant, etc. The coat will also last just about forever. You can sit on it, have your dogs chew on it (while you're wearing it), the top pocket(s) are big enough to hold a cell phone, and the hand pockets are big enough to stash stolen napkins in after a visit to the local store. I do not work for Carhartt...I just own a coat and really like it (the optional hoods fit like crap though). You can see the coats on the Carhartt website, maybe even on eBay. The zipper is gold, but the coat (which does come in black) has a flap that covers it. Hope this helps.
