100 things you might or might not know, or want to know about me
Since JaG just did this, and Tony copied her, and I looking for excuses to not do the other work I really need to I'm going to follow suit. (Be careful if you click the link to JaG's site as she's using that super annoying snap pop up thing which makes it near impossible to read her site).
1. I have no concept how old people think I am, and I don't really care.
2. It's not unusual for me to drink more than 10 shots of espresso in a single day.
3. I can drink multiple shots of espresso and still go to sleep within an hour if I'm trying.
4. I can also go days / weeks without drinking any coffee without getting headaches or other ill side effects, though I don't like to.
5. The older I get the less extra stuff I like in my coffee and rarely put anything in drip coffee these days. This secretly makes me feel like a 1920's private investigator for some reason.
6. I love traveling, and get bummed out looking at those "where I've been" maps when I see how many places I haven't been to yet.
7. I have a problem with authority. A big one.
8. Ok it's not so much a problem with authority as it is a problem with perceived authority. It's like respect, you have to earn it.
9. I think there are few worse things in business than micromanaging people. The end result is the only thing that matters.
10. I won't answer the phone if the number of the person calling me is private, restricted, or not in my address book.
11. One of my biggest pet peeves are when people leave voice mail but don't say what they were calling about. The worst is when they allude to it by saying something like "call me back, I just have a quick question to ask you." If it's so quick then just ask it on the voice mail!
12. I'm easily distracted.
13. Music has been one of the most important things to me for the majority of my life, and lyrics are crucial to me liking a band or not. The darkest parts of my life have been without soundtracks.
14. The biggest heartbreaks of my life have not been because something didn't work out the way I hoped it would, but rather people not being as dependable as I hoped they would be.
15. That said, I generally assume people are not dependable and only looking out for themselves. I find it's better to be pleasantly surprised if that turns out to be wrong than the converse.
16. The first bike I ever bought myself was a fuji mountain bike, and it was bright orange. I don't remember what happened to it, but I know I replaced it with a Kona because that was the cool brand to have in Gainesville.
17. The only clothing designer I've ever really been a fan of is Ben Sherman.
18. It's been at least 5 years since I've owned a pair of jeans, possibly longer. This was completely unintentional.
19. I don't really have anything against jeans per se, but after years of seeing guys at tech conferences wearing then with loafers and sport coats trying to look casual, they kind of make me want to puke.
20. I think "that made me through up in my mouth a little" is one of the most over used movie quotes in the history of ever.
21. In high school I listened to music on vinyl and cassette tape exclusively, even though I owned CDs because I didn't have a way to play them. I bought my first CD player a year after I moved away to college, from Radio Shack.
22. I bought that CD player on a Radio Shack credit card, and it took me about 5 years to pay it off.
23. The apartment I lived in I paid $80 a month rent and I had 2 roommates. We all moved out when the land lord upped the rent to the point where we would have had to pay over $100 a month each.
24. When we moved out I hadn't done so well at the finding a new place to live part of it and was essentually homeless for 3-4 months though Jessica from Less Than Jake let me crash in her living room for most of that time even though I barely knew her. To this day that's one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me.
25. At that point in my life everything I owned could fit in a small car.
26. I think there is a lot of truth to the "the things you own end up owning you" quote from Fight Club and getting rid of a major chunk of my stuff earlier this year was amazingly liberating. I think about it every day both before I buy anything, and in looking for ways to get rid of more things.
27. I want to buy a new bike, and will very likely sell my old one when I do even though I love it, simply because there's really no reason for me to have 2 bikes - I can only ride one at a time.
28. I love watching movies and have often, for months at a time, watched 2 movies every single day. Having the Arclight nearby is one of the reasons I love LA and couldn't live anywhere else.
29. I've resisted joining Netflix for all these years because I like the instant gratification of going to the rental store and picking up exactly the movie I want to see right now. That said, I haven't been to the rental store since March because I'm afraid they will ask me how/where Caryn is, and so when I just got an offer to join Netflix and get 2,500 bonus AA miles I went for it.
30. It's been several years since my cat, Bill, died. She was 23 when she died and I still miss her and think about her every time I see another cat.
31. The first time I ever quit every job I had to focus on my own company and pay myself a salary, I paid myself $300 a month. It was a very serious decision a few months later when I raised that to $350.
32. I love it when I set iTunes to random and it jumps from something mellow and jazzy like Miles Davis to some chaotic death metal like Assück or Brutal Truth.
33. I'm not as good at getting away from email as I want to be, or as I want everyone else to think I am.
34. I wish I knew how to play guitar, yet when I day dream about being a rock star I always put myself in the amazing-lyric-writing singer position even though I know there's no way I could ever do that.
35. The Pogues are one of my favorite bands ever, not because of Shane's beautiful love songs, but because of the outright hate laced into all of them.
36. I have no problem eating cupcakes, cake, or candy instead of a proper meal and always use the excuse that I'm an adult and can make those kinds of decisions.
37. I learned how to swim when I was 6 or 7 and lived in or near a pool for a huge chunk of my childhood and teenage years, but haven't been swimming in probably 9 years.
38. The first car I ever bought cost $500 and it didn't have a title. The guy said he lost it, but said it would be more trouble than it was worth if I ever tried to go to the DMV and get a replacement for it. fast forward about 10 years and the Vespa I drove around Chicago for a year or so was almost an identical situation.
39. I have a crazy sweet tooth and and an almost compulsive need to have something sweet every night. Vegan ice cream has a very short life span when it's in my possession.
40. I like living in a big city so that when I'm home alone I know it's by choice and I could be out doing something social if I wanted to, and not because there is nothing going on.
41. I have a tendency to be attracted to girls who I have no chance of ever hooking up with, mostly because they already have boy friends. This isn't so much a self esteem thing as it is a emotional self defense mechanism. There's no chance for things to fall apart later if there's no chance for them to ever start in the first place.
42. If I was king I would make talking on a cell phone while driving punishable by death, or at least sever public humiliation.
43. There are very few photos of my from my high school years, as I actively tried not to be photographed. I kind of regret that to some extent now, but I'm sure it added to my aloof persona then.
44. Not that that helped me with the ladies at all.
45. I haven't watched TV in probably 5 years and don't miss it at all. That said I love watching a good TV series on DVD.
46. I've been in 3 different fist fights in my life where I was pretty sure I was going to get stabbed before they were over, but for some reason I never did.
47. For the few years as a kid that I went to private schools that required uniforms I hated wearing them, but now I'm totally into the idea of having 5-6 of the same piece of clothing that you like so that you don't have to worry about what to wear each day.
48. Right now I have two pair of sneakers that I wear regularly, I can't remember the last time I had options like that.
49. I'd much rather get bad news up front than be lied to and then find out the truth later. I don't mind things not working the way I want them too so long as I know that is the case as soon as possible. I don't like being under false impressions.
50. I'm terrible at networking. The amount of people I know and am in touch with regularly is nothing compared to what it would be if I knew what I was doing.
51. I don't suffer fools gladly.
52. I used to pull practical jokes on my friends all the time and loved it, I wish I knew more people who were into that kind of thing. I generally assume most people are too wound up for that these days.
53. I like showers better than baths, but mostly because they go quicker.
54. In my early 20's I thought about making a list of things I wanted to do before I turned 30, I'm 32 now and while I didn't actually make the list so I can't cross check I don't think I've done that bad as a whole, but probably not as well with the sex stuff as I'd hoped.
55. I'm not as annoyed by ants trying to escape the rain by coming into my house as I used to be.
56. I don't enjoy musicals because I can't stop thinking that in the real world people never just burst out into song, meanwhile I love horror movies and John Woo-esque action movies even though that shit never happens in the real world either. Go figure.
57. I hate when people get upset about things not going their way, when they make no effort to push things in that direction. I think people really do know what they want, most are just afraid to admit it for fear it's not what everyone else wants.
58. I love having AirTunes set up in different rooms in my house.
59. If I could pay someone to combine my iTunes libraries into one master archive I would.
60. I'm a fairly antisocial person, preferring one on one or small groups of people that I have a solid connection with to crowds of people, and actually don't like social situations where I have to be "on."
61. I think actions speak way louder than words, which in some cases is good, but often the actions and words conflict. This isn't too surprising, it's easier to say you want to change the world than actually doing it.
62. I don't believe in god. Or wizards, fairies, or dragons for that matter. Ghosts and aliens I'm kind of on the fence about.
63. I love having things organized, yet hate filing and organizing.
64. Around my house or on my desk I'm more concerned with things looking in order than actually being put away, this means I'm regularly making sure that stacks of paper are lined up so their edge is parallel to the side of the desk rather than filed properly away or that shoes are lined up nicely near the door than put away in the closet where they belong.
65. I've never kissed an asian girl and generally assume they are all completely out of my league.
66. I've decided exactly what my next several tattoos will be, yet still up in the air about exact placement. I wish I could just make up my mind and run with it.
67. I refuse to chase people around to maintain friendships. Sometimes this means I don't talk to people for years and when I do it's as if we never stopped talking, sometimes it's just disappointing that neither of us was more interested in staying in touch.
68. Growing up in an Irish Catholic family I can spot a guilt trip a mile away and I like to think I'm fairly immune to them these days.
69. I've had a lot of people try and sabotage one aspect of my life or another over the years, but no one has ever been as good at it as I am.
70. It's amazing how much the music I listened to when I was growing up still means to me.
71. I love people watching. Given the right location I could sit for hours and just watch how everyone interacts with each other. This plays very well into my feelings of being an outsider/spectator in most social situations.
72. The smell of beer vividly reminds me mopping spilled bear up after throwing house parties or when I worked as bouncer at a club in Gainesville. Both make me a little sick and I have no desire to ever taste that crap.
73. I'm genuinely shocked when I meet someone and they tell me they read my blog, even though I know from my traffic stats that some people actually do.
74. I hate hearing people talk about situations where they just lucked into everything working out just perfectly for them. Either because I know it's bullshit and they actually worked really hard to get those results, or it seems like they are rubbing it in the faces of everyone else who is working very hard for those results.
75. Learning to just let go and let whatever is going to happen just happen was one of the best things I ever did, and I wish I'd figured that out 15 years ago.
76. A few months ago I decided I was going to start being blatantly honest and never wanted to walk away from a conversation wishing I'd said something that I didn't. I've been very happy with the results of that, though I'm pretty sure some people haven't liked being on the receiving end of it. Truth is I wish other people took the same approach to me.
77. I firmly believe there are consequences for every single one of our actions. Some are good, some aren't, but the willingness to accept those consequences says a lot about a person.
78. I love Los Angeles, yet am disgusted by Hollywood because of what it does to people. It's a shiny brass ring that nothing good ever comes from reaching for.
79. I'm one of the most awkward people I know, but I play it off really well in most situations.
80. I hate making appointments with people I don't know, and if I ever get to the point where I have an assistant that will be one of their main tasks.
81. There is a fireplace in my house, and it has a remote control. That's right, a remote control fire place. Shockingly this gotten me zero action.
82. My friends are the most important people in the world to me. In most cases I haven't been able to count on them any more than anyone else, but they are usually the only ones who are up front about it.
83. I stopped working at Playboy in 2001 yet every single month they send me the new issue, even though I've moved several times and never once subscribed to the magazine.
84. I realized while talking to my therapist the other day that anytime a girl is interested in me I think they must be delusional and it's only a matter of time before they come to their senses.
85. I love the results of cooking, but never do it when it's just for me. Of course I never invite anyone over to cook for them either.
86. I'm militantly anti-branding when it comes to things I own/wear. I won't buy clothing if it has obvious logos on it that I can't cut off, an one of the draws to the new bike I'm thinking of getting is the complete absence of any logos. I think if I bought a car I'd pull the logos off that too.
87. I joke about liking guns and the cliche "an armed society is a polite society" but when I stop and think about it, I think people probably would be a lot nicer in general if they thought everyone else had a gun.
88. Pure Luck is quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in all of Los Angeles and the biggest problem I'm having is when I go deciding if I should order something new or the thing I had last time which was no doubt amazing.
89. I try not to eat food past 11pm, or baring that within 3 hours of going to sleep, however I have to eat the moment I get up or I'm groggy the entire rest of the day. Plus I really like breakfast cereal.
90. Growing up in Florida gave me a twisted perception of what Orange Juice should taste like, and as much as I love it I find it undrinkable in most prepackaged varieties.
91. I love driving a manual transmission and hate that my truck is an automatic, which is one of many reasons I'm trying to sell it.
92. I have too many ideas for my own good.
93. Every time I listen to the Bad Brains I'm blown away by how amazing they were and how the songs they wrote 20-25 years ago are still better than most of the unoriginal crap written since.
94. I used to think I had it all figured out, now I think realizing that not only did I have none of it figured out but also that other people were off to a way better start is the first real step towards figuring anything out.
95. I'm pretty unthrilled by the iPhone, yet can't wait to get my hands on an iPod Touch.
96. I hate it when people tell me how much money I could be making consulting for companies who don't understand the web and blogs and online communities but need to. Not because I think they are wrong, but because I'm not good at putting myself out there like that and when people tell me that I feel like I'm missing out on something.
97. I hate how thinking about who might be reading my blog has prevented me from writing some things at some times. It's weird because I rarely bit my tongue in person and don't know why I'm more reserved at a distance.
98. I can't believe how much harder to write this list was than I thought it would be when I started, and I can't believe how little I wrote about sex.
99. Really happy and cheery people kinda freak me out, I like cynical people with scars. Damage and baggage shows you've lived and know what your limits are, or at least know which mistakes you don't want to make again.
100. Jobs I've had where I got a steady paycheck: Dish washer at a seafood restaurant, bagger and later stocker at a grocery store, video store clerk and later wedding video editor at the same place, pizza maker and later delivery driver, coupon designer, art director at a magazine, bouncer / door man at a night club, art director at a record label, sr designer at a major dot com in the first boom.

"97. I hate how thinking about who might be reading my blog has prevented me from writing some things at some times. It's weird because I rarely bit my tongue in person and don't know why I'm more reserved at a distance. "
When I started my account on SG I didn't know anyone there. I could post about anything and it was so refreshing being completely open and get feedback from strangers. Anonymity is one of the greatest benefits of the internet. However, so is it's ability to connect people. Unfortunately, in most cases, you can really only have one or the other.

Is it really THAT annoying to read my site with the snap pop up thing? I was thinking about taking it off my blog so I really want to know.
BTW, I like your list!

I loved reading your list. It inspires me to make one of my own...
I also loved how your female cat was named Bill. Excellent. :)
