04/04/2003 Entry: "salesman"
My old friend Scott writes in:
"Just finished watching the Criterion DVD reissue of Salesman, this documentary on door-to-door Bible salesmen from 1969. It's equal parts depressing and fascinating watching these guys browbeat and pressure poor families into buying these $50 Bibles, then getting the same pressures applied by their boss when they get back to their motel rooms. Just watching one of the main characters slowly growing more bitter and frustrated as his sales go down is both sad and strangely inspiritional.
Plus, a large portion of it was shot in Opa Locka, FL, which I seem to remember is one of those places people call Orlando, even though it's not."
This sounds like an awesome flick. Gotta go track that one down.
Also got an interesting e-mail today about something called Filmmovement which actually looks really interesting. Seems like you join up and once a month they send you a DVD of a brand new indie film that doesn't have national distribution yet, so you couldn't go see it in the theaters. Being a movie nut, and not having any kind of TV service right now, that sounds right down my alley.

I haven't seen either one of these movies... but I think you wrapped them up well.
