04/14/2003 Entry: "scenecrap"
I hate scenesters. No matter the scene, they are there. From punk rock shows to art openings, they slime their way in and fuck the whole thing up. The punk rock variety used to irritate me in college with their 'zines and pot lucks and all that crap, the art opening ones are the subject of my ire these days. My general rule with art openings is get there as early as you can before the crowds show up and you can actually see things. Check it out, and then jet. If you are lucky, you'll miss the hordes rushing in as you take off.
I went to an opening the other night and got stuck there for a few hours. The work was great, the scene sucked ass. Of the 50 or so people crammed in the 100 square foot space, at least 45 of them had thos stupid hipster golfing/old man skully cap things on. How fashionable of you. How about this, just skip the beating around the bush and all come dressed up like sheep next time.
The next opening was at the new Giant Robot store/gallery thing. The store is very nice, the work was cool, and we got out soon enough to avoid the mess. The word on the street is most people weren't so lucky. Hey brainchild, if you are at at ART gallery, were people are there to see the ART, might be a bitchin idea to not lean up on the art and talk to your friends about your new prada purchase for 2 hours.
Anyway, here's some stuff to go check out. Xeni sent out a link about this mobile phone company in HK that is selling a service that tracks what buildings have had people with SARS in them, so you can, well, not be.
And, if you thought Freedom Fries were a step in the right direction, bust out the credit card for this one.

Hahaha...the flag-o-rama site is a hoot. I could see some redneck "patriot" actually thinking these were HSN products for order. Where is my patriot "jock support"? I want to support my troops!
I need to take your advice about going to art openings. I get to those things practically in the middle of brouhaha, and it bites. I need to go to art shows like I go to restaurants: early with the senior citizens.
