04/22/2003 Entry: "Reality...better than reality."
I'm glad we're finally getting some reality movies into theaters. I was just thinking about how I can't get enough reality TV and of course, actual reality. Once upon a time, I used to go to movies to get away from it all, to escape, but now I'm just looking for that glimpse into other people's completely fabricated and set up "real" lives. I can't wait for that Cancun Spring Break one coming out (I'm going to rent an entire theater just for friends and me, to make sure there are no disturbances). The most recent reality film is called A Mighty Wind, and it's about some folk bands from the past all coming back together for a massive concert to honor some dead guy. It was beautiful. In our war-torn times, it's nice to see people who really care and are trying to make this world a more pleasant place for us all. I wasn't alive in the 60's, so I guess it's no surprise that I've never heard of any of the groups in the movie, but they seemed nice enough. One group is Spinal Tap, but they use different accents, and they play crappy folk music instead of all awesome timeless rock anthems. I'm not sure if Spinal Tap evolved from the folk group (I forgot their crappy name), and then they got the accents or what exactly happened, but it's good to see them rock out, even if it's just folk rock. Many, many people in the theater were laughing basically through the whole movie, which is nice, though sometimes they'd laugh just because some of the people were kind of strange or whatever. Hey moviegoers! Let's see you do that to their faces! Just because you see people who are acting like idiots and completely unaware of it, doesn't mean you laugh at them. Maybe that was the case just in my jaded, egotistical Los Angeles theater, full of snobs who all think they're better than everyone else just because they live in LA.
